We were introduced to some of the most serious of the sport... they're called "birders" and have a language and commitment of there own. We had a great time.
Las Perlas: On to the beaches... first stop was Isla Contrador just south of Panama City in the Pacific. This resort island is a get-away for many wealthy Panamanians. It is the largest island in a group of about twenty that are known for their pearls... ergo the regional name "Las Perlas." You guessed it... a great place for pearl buying and deep sea fishing. We did neither of these things and instead just enjoyed the relaxed resort atmosphere. Unfortunate Note: Our most "exciting" time came while out snorkeling... Karen got stung by jelly fish. It was really awful and on top of it all... John wouldn't/couldn't pee on Karen to help relieve the pain! Where was "Chandler" when we needed him!?! (...maybe we've seen too much TV?)
San Blas: On to the Caribbean! The San Blas islands are comprised of about 365 coconut palm tree dotted, white sandy beached, beautiful islands just off the Caribbean coast of Panama. The absolute remoteness of this area and the indigenous people that govern the region separately from Panama make it a very unique place. While travel magazines could be covered with pictures of its undeniable beauty, the complete lack of services/infrastructure make a trip here more of a survival test than a luxury vacation. This is definitely not a place for everyone to travel. About two cramped, hot nights on the crowded populated islands was about all we could manage even though trips to nearby uninhabited islands were fabulous. Maybe if we had our own yacht...
